Woodchip Inoculation with Fungi

  • 4701 N 51st Street Boulder, CO, 80301 United States (map)

REGISTRATION IS CLOSED - ALL SPOTS FILLED

Please join Boulder Mushroom, Boulder Watershed Collective, and Grama Grass and Livestock, with support from Boulder County and the City of Boulder, for a volunteer day to help us inoculate wood chips with locally derived fungi.  This work is intended to improve soil health, increase carbon sequestration, support wildfire mitigation and advance our collective ability to develop resilient solutions to climate challenges.  The inoculated wood chips will partially decompose in piles over the winter and then be spread across a portion of City of Boulder Open Space property.  This property has poor soil and is being restored to support healthy grasslands and future grazing.

There are significant efforts across the West and in Boulder County to increase the pace and scale of fire mitigation and forest restoration to protect watersheds, ecosystems, communities, and critical infrastructure.  One of the greatest challenges with this work is the excess biomass (wood slash) generated from these projects.  This project strives to turn biomass “waste” into a productive resource which can sequester carbon, support ecosystem resilience and regenerative agriculture through improved soil health.

Volunteers will be breaking apart blocks of mushroom inoculant and mixing it with wood chips. Gloves will be provided or bring your own. Hats, sun protection, and water are recommended.

The property address is 4701 N. 51st Street, Boulder, CO, 80301, however the green gate entrance is off Kelso Road on the north side of property. Street parking on Kelso Road is best. Reach out if you’d like to review the map and discuss location in more detail or would like any more information.
